marching along the Wellington cbd with my 2 year old daughter asleep in my arms, acutely aware that somewhere along the Gaza strip there was a parent doing the same thing, except that in their arms they held the weight of death and not sleep; their daughter’s eyes would not open again.

when my kids ask, I tell them that’s why we are marching.

counted my blessings - then, the curses that had been passed down the line through trauma. from a father and a grandmother that did all they could to hide the fact that they were samoan, in the era of the dawn raids.

realising that the same ideology that drives men to drops bombs on brown babies and mothers in gaza is the same ideology that drove men in nz to harm brown fathers and grandmothers like mine, so that it began to bleed the brown from them and their children in the name of assimilation.

none of us are free until all of us are free.
